Novels are long fictional stories which have been known to be around for centuries. Sequential art has a similar history; some argue that Egyptian hieroglyphs are the earliest form of sequential art. Sequential art has grown in complexity over the centuries. The present day comics are an advanced form of this type of art.
What has come about in the last half of the twentieth century is the development of the modern graphic novel. The combination of comics, great story telling and beautiful sequential art has led to the creation of some of the most awe-inspiring works of art imaginable.
Some of the best known fictional characters have been featured in graphic novels. Alan Moore’s and Brian Bolland’s Batman: The Killing Joke is one such example. It is one of the greatest works of fiction ever produced.
Graphic novels have had their share of criticism. Some say that the term graphic novel is incorrect, it should be called collage book or something similar. I am myself a fan of graphic novels. I believe that the terms is correct and that this particular type of art form has a bright future.
