Star Wars is a Great Story About Power & Corruption

“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.”

This is Lord Acton’s most famous saying. I believe that the Star Wars saga is a manifestation of this. The magnificent saga of Star Wars is about power and how it makes people go mad with it.

Senator Palpatine destroys the Jedi using one of their own (Anakin Skywalker). He gets rid of the Imperial Senate with his cunning and ill will and takes over the Galactic Republic. He turns the Republic into his personal Galactic Empire. He vows to hunt down every last opponent including the Jedi.

The Senator is corrupted by power and as his power grows his corruption becomes absolute. Even his physical features are transformed from human looking to devilish looking. The emperor truly becomes more diabolical with time.

These traits are shared by Darth Vader to a great extent but there is always some good in him. Even though Vader does terrible things, in the end he kills the Emperor himself.

The story of Episode VII The Force Awakens is similar in nature. The Evil Supreme Leader Snoke uses Kylo Ren to kill his own father and General Hux’s obsession with power grows with time.

Hux becomes really evil and morally corrupt. He deliver a wicked Nazi style speech before destroying the Hosnian System and killing Billions. When he is delivering his infamous speech, the look in his eyes is blood hungry.

Star Wars explores the battle between good end evil. Both good and evil reside within all of us. We have the power to decide what to choose. Just like in ‘Return of The Jedi’, Vader lets his good side take over. If we let the good side take over we can become really wonderful human beings!
